The way we see it
This is the cave adventure for groups who would rather walk. A short drive on a gravel road leads to the trailhead, and from there a narrow path crosses the Caribbean jungle until the ground opens into the first cave. Along the way you walk through four cave systems, on trails that run underground between galleries, vaults and columns that water carved into the limestone over thousands of years.
Inside, the temperature stays between 22 and 24 °C all year. Some passages are completely dark and lit only by your headlamp; others open to shafts of daylight and to tree roots that break through the rock in search of water.
Why we recommend it
Your guide reads the caves with you: how the water shaped them, the bats and birds that live there, and the stories they hold, from Xibalbá, the Maya underworld, to their use as shelter during the Caste War and as storerooms for the chicle tappers. It is a real hike in the jungle, private for your group, with transportation handled door to door.
Getting there
Private round-trip transportation is included, in our vehicle with a cooler, ice and cold water. Pickup between Playa del Carmen and Tulum is included; other areas or relevant detours are quoted separately. We confirm your pickup time and the meeting details with your booking.

What to bring
- Closed, non-slip shoes that can get wet or muddy; sandals and open shoes are not allowed
- Light sport clothing with sleeves
- Biodegradable insect repellent
- A small towel and a dry change of clothes and shoes
- A small backpack or waist pack for your phone; the caves have no signal, Wi-Fi or GPS
Not permitted inside the caves
- Food, drinks other than water, gum or tobacco
- Medium or large backpacks, frame packs or child carriers
- Speakers, headphones or jewelry
- Walking sticks, tripods, strollers or pets
- Touching the formations: it is prohibited and punishable by law
Before you book
- Moderate to high fitness and good balance: about 10 km on foot over 3 to 4 hours, in tropical heat and humidity
- Inside the caves the ground can be wet, slippery, steep or uneven, with low and narrow passages: helmet on at all times, single file and at a steady pace
- From 8 years old for children who walk about 10 km; under 15, with a parent or guardian
- This activity calls for good health and physical condition. We advise against it during pregnancy, after recent surgery, with reduced mobility, or with claustrophobia or fear of the dark
- Book at least 48 hours ahead; the hike runs rain or shine
- After the hike: a small pool, bathrooms and changing rooms
